Stone Cold Touch by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Stone Cold Touch - Jennifer L. Armentrout

Release Date: October 21, 2014

Publication Group: Harlequin Teen

Pages: 464

Interests: Trilogy

Other Book Titles in this series: White Hot Kiss

Goodreads Summary:

Every touch has its price

Layla Shaw is trying to pick up the pieces of her shattered life—no easy task for a seventeen-year-old who’s pretty sure things can’t get worse. Her impossibly gorgeous best friend, Zayne, is forever off-limits thanks to the mysterious powers of her soul-stealing kiss. The Warden clan that has always protected her is suddenly keeping dangerous secrets. And she can barely think about Roth, the wickedly hot demon prince who understood her in ways no one else could.

But sometimes rock bottom is only the beginning. Because suddenly Layla’s powers begin to evolve, and she’s offered a tantalizing taste of what has always been forbidden. Then, when she least expects it, Roth returns, bringing news that could change her world forever. She’s finally getting what she always wanted, but with hell literally breaking loose and the body count adding up, the price may be higher than Layla is willing to pay.

After reading Stone Cold Touch, I was struck by the profound intelligence JLA had written. This novel is a roller coaster of emotions. Layla's story has heightened in this book, as she had to patch together her life which rapidly crumpled into pieces. The heartbreak with Roth and the newly discovered relationship with Zayne had me at the edge of my seat, thirsting for more.

Jennifer L. Armentrout's writing was brilliance on paper. Her wording was easily understandable, but mysterious at the same time. I honestly had no problem with the grammar, punctuation and sentence structure of this book. The only problem I had, and probably the general audience, with this book was the amount of time it took to get to the solution of the climax; only to come across another problem which is left at a cliff hanger. The heartbreak and anxiety we held in order to see what occurs in the end, only for it to extinguish...and reoccur so quickly it's like nothing ever happened.

Although I enjoyed reading this book, I quickly came annoyed with a few of the characters. For example, Abbot and Maddox. Even though I know it's in the nature of their character, the amount of distrust that radiated off both characters made me yearn to just materialize into the book and slap them both silly. I couldn't help feel an immense amount of sympathy for Layla, as she had to live with that with months on end.

Overall, I would recommend this book to any young adult reader. At the same time, I would also recommend everyone to at least pick up one of Jennifer L. Armentrout's books and reading them. JLA is a brilliant author and deserves more canvass and appreciation for her amazing work.

Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan

The Blood of Olympus - Rick Riordan

Publication Group: Disney-Hyperion

Pages: 502

Interests: Heroes of Olympus Series

Other Titles In The Series: The Lost Hero, The Son of Neptune, The Mark of Athena, The House of Hades.

Rating: 4 Stars

In the last book of the Heroes of Olympus series, Percy and the rest of the Prophecy of Seven must continue their journey to Athens while their friends Reyna, Nico and Coach Hedge transport the Athena Parthenos to Camp Half-Blood. Continuing on their journey, Percy and his friends encounter more dangerous obstacles from both Gaia and the gods of olympus. Th clock is ticking, counting down the minutes until Gaia awakens from her slumber and destroys the entire world. As the demi gods race against this beating clock, they come to terms with fate and understand that sometimes sacrifices need to be made.

Rick Riordan well wrote this novel and had no trouble keeping his audience entertained at every section of this book. The complex situations each demigod had to endure was individually heart-breaking and intriguing. However, the plot line could be predictable at times, which made the overall book a little boring. Personally, i like going into a book where i do not expect what is going to occur next. Being able to correctly interpret what would attack the demigods next, made the book less exciting.

Although, this book was an enjoyable read for me. I am somewhat sad to have ended the series. Percy Jackson's adventures in both The Olympians series and The Heroes of Olympus series made up a lot of my child/ pre-teen life. I will sincerely miss these adventures and will carry the lifelong lessons that were taught in these books with me forever.

I will recommend not only Blood of Olympus but all of Rick Riordan's mythology books to everyone who loves adventure, comedy and a hint of...well...mythology.

Anna Oliphant has moved to Paris, France to spend her last year of high school at The School of America. Although she is excited to visit the great city of love, Anna does not want to leave her life in Atlanta behind. In Paris, Anna finds herself caught in a love triangle with the sexy and thrilling Etienne St. Clair. However, not only is he her new best friend, but he is also currently in a relationship with another girl.

In this thrilling novel, Perkins shows us how change isn't always bad and that love will always conquer all. Stephanie Perkins was successful in portraying the immense conflict of an average teenage girl's life, when it is impacted with continuous alterations and challenges. The love struck words displayed between Anna and Etienne touched me and had me at the edge of my seat, thirsting for more. I can honestly say, Stephanie Perkins has written a Must-Read novel that would attract the best of audiences and lure teens into what would sure be their favorite book yet.

I enjoyed reading Anna and the French Kiss because it was empowering. Anna's character proved that no what obstacles appear in your way, there is always a happy ending. You're life may be a living hell at the moment, but if you keep pushing and live your life, there will be a happy ending at the end of the road.

I would recommend this novel to any teenage girl who enjoyed The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy by Jenny Han and girls of all ages who love romance, realism and adventure.

Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock

Hemlock - Kathleen Peacock

Release Date: May 8, 2012

Publication Group: Katherine Tegen Books

Pages: 404

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 5

At first i did not want to read this novel as other werewolf novels were not that appeasing to me. However, as soon as I read the first few sentences, I couldn't help but be sucked into this new world.

This YA novel is about a girl named Mackenzie (Mac) Dobson who lives in a town called Hemlock in the United States. This town is set during a time of sadness and fear as werewolf attacks have been prevalent throughout the years. Most importantly, the story surrounds Mac and her two friends Jason and Kyle as the three of them deal with the sudden death of their best friend Amy who was brutally murdered by a werewolf. However, Mac soon finds out that werewolves are not the only ones she should be wary of; the Trackers are just as equally dangerous. As Mac attempts to seek revenge for her friend's death, she is thrown into chaos and violence that places her in sudden danger.

I couldn't help but fall in love with Kyle Harper as I continued reading this thrilling novel. He is the stereotypical boyfriend material every girl swoons over. He is sweet, handsome, muscularly built and just down right amazing. However, Jason is the "bad boy", always getting into fights and drinking every second of the day. Jason just annoyed me. Although, Mac surprised me. She wasn't the stereotypical damsel in distress. Sometimes throughout the book, she reminded me of Rose Hathaway from Vampire Academy. I honestly enjoyed reading through Mac's point of view. She was not annoying or weak in any case. I think she was a good female lead character. Also, I think Serena was a better best friend to Mac than Amy would ever be. Just saying.

The plot line was intriguing. I enjoyed how Kathleen Peacock foretold a complicated story line without confusing her audience. Her fictional world was very interesting to read. It had me at the end of my seat every second of the way.

Kathleen Peacock's writing was very good in the point of view of a teenage girl and her personality. The text was not childish for the setting; however it was not too sophisticated as well.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock. It is an amazing werewolf novel and a heart-breaking romance. I recommend this book to any readers who enjoyed The Body Finder and anyone who is interested in supernatural romance.

SPOILER ALERT!

Valkyrie Rising by Ingrid Paulson

Valkyrie Rising - Ingrid Paulson

Release Date: November 22, 2013

Publication Group: HarperCollins Publishers

Pages: 345

Format: Hardcover

Rating: 3.75

Valkyrie Rising follows the tales of the legendary Valkyrie Warriors of Norse Mythology. It is told from the perspective of Elsa Overholt, who ventures to Skavopoll, Norway to visit her grandmother with her brother Graham and his best friend, Tucker Halloway. While in the tranquil fishing village, Elsa learns about missing boys among rumors of impractical kidnappings. Above all, does she consider the ancient power that is lingering in her blood, urging Ellie to acknowledge her position amongst her Valkyrie Sisters. Instead of the peaceful vacation she signed up for, suddenly there is a lot of dangers to handle for a girl from Los Angelos. Together with, the sarcastic and alluring Tuck, Elsa must rescue her brother Graham, expose the truth behind the disappearances and impede the heinous scheme behind them.

The book was fairly understandable and wasn't confusing in the least bit. The story line was easy to follow along and the book overall, was quite fun to read. I enjoyed Graham's over-protective instinct towards Elsa, I thought it was quite sweet. Plus, I can understand Ellie's annoyance towards this, as I have an older brother as well. Additionally, Tucker's attraction and ever-sarcastic behaviour, made the book even more interesting to read.

However, I felt as if the book was a little dull. In the beginning, the book was moving a little too slowly for my taste. I felt that the author took too long to have Elsa discover who and what she really was. Also, I believe that Ingrid Paulson could have been slightly more descriptive in some cases (i.e. the fight scenes with the Valkyries).

The climax was very interesting and convinced me continue reading. At the beginning I had to force myself to finish the novel however; that quickly changed due to Graham's abduction and Tucker's confessions.

The setting of the novel, Skavopoll, Norway, figured into the the book very effectively, as Norway is one of the countries which contain Norse mythology as their religion and beliefs.

Overall, Ingrid Paulson did a great job in writing this YA mythological novel. It was quite fun to read and i enjoyed every part of it. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Norse Mythology, fantasy, adventure, action and romance. This is a great YA novel to read during the summer and I hope many people decide to read it on their vacations or even during their spare time.

What I Thought Was True by Huntley Fitzpatrick

What I Thought Was True - Huntley Fitzpatrick

I did not quite like this book in the beginning however; as it got closer to the middle I couldn't stop myself from reading.

The book is about a girl named Gwen Castle who's dream is to escape the island she lives on. The sole purpose of this dream is because of a certain boy named Cassidy (Cass) Somers who she wants to forget more than ever. The story begins at the beginning of summer. Throughout the first few days of summer, she cant help running into Cass as he is everywhere on the island. She has a rule to avoid him at all costs but as the book plays out, Gwen finds that avoiding him would become the hardest accomplishment yet. The book outlines the various events Gwen goes through to avoid Cass meanwhile dealing with her cousin who's obsessing over being captain of the swim team. Although the book focuses on characters like Emory, Gwen, Nic, Vic, Cass and much more, the real story lies between Gwen and Cass. As the summer continues and Cass and Gwen open up to each other, they realize that what they thought was true, was really a lie.

I loved this book mostly due to the little excuses Cass uses to see Gwen and the comedy of reading how much they want each other but they continue to portray mixed signals to one another.

I didn't like how the author portrayed Gwen, especially in the past. I understand how Gwen's past morphed her into the girl she was in the present, but i just didn't connect with the character. I liked Cass a lot. He seems so humble, loyal and just down right hot! I thought Nic was an okay of a character. I understood where the dedication came from, but he started to really annoy me towards the end. I hated Viv at the end for what she did. She is a good best friend but my good opinion flew out the window when i read of what she did. However, out of all the characters, I really disliked Gwen's dad. I can't really say much more but if you read the book, you'll understand. My favourite character overall, would have to be Emory. He was just too cute and funny. I loved him

The writing, I would say was easy to understand but still held that mature scholarly tone. You could easily feel what the characters were going through, especially Gwen. I believe that this book was well written.

Overall, this is a good contemporary book. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes summer contemporary and a lot of drama.

Under The Never Sky

Under the Never Sky - Veronica Rossi

Honestly, I had a love-hate relationship with this book. I loved the concept of the story, it reminded me a lot of the Divergent Trilogy by Veronica Roth.

First, I loved the characters. I enjoyed reading how Aria grew from an innocent dependent girl into the independent and strong female character she becomes. I fell in love with Perry; I love how he easily becomes jealous of the way Aria is easy-going with Roar as well as he becomes accustomed (rendered) to Aria in the condition where he doesn't feel like himself without her. Roar is just to die for. He is hilarious and alluring; his loyalty and love towards Liv, especially in there situation, summarize how dedicated he is as a person and that he will fight for anyone he loves.

Second, the world itself, was confusing to comprehend at first. I believe that more description is needed for readers to truly comprehend the events occurring at the beginning of the book. However, it gets better to understand as the book plays out.

Also, I would say that the plot was okay. In my opinion, the plot moved a little too slow at times however, it was fairly fast-paced overall. It was a really good read for an adventure book. Usually, i would get easily bored however, Rossi easily kept my attention.

Under The Never Sky was well written. The content was easily comparable to a teenager (as the age of the Protagonists).

In my opinion, I believe that the romantic portion of the book took too long to surface. The majority of the book was mostly about their different quests and losses. However, the romance was quite intriguing. I believe that Aria and Perry make a beautiful and strange couple.

Overall, this book is fairly good for it genre. Honestly, I went into this book thinking that iIwould not like it but was quickly surprised. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Divergent Trilogy.

I cannot wait to read the next book: Through The Ever Night.

Review of The Vincent Brothers by Abbi Glines

The Vincent Brothers: Extended and Uncut - Abbi Glines

This was a good contemporary read for me. I really enjoyed the book especially the main characters: Sawyer and Lana.

This book is the sequel to The Vincent boys however, it's one of those books that the stories are related to each other but if you read the sequel instead of the first book, you will not get confused.

The sequel is about Sawyer who isn't over the fact that his girlfriend left him for his cousin/brother and in order to make her jealous (or tries to anyways), he begins to have a fling with her cousin, Lana. However, knowing that he still cares for her cousin, Lana allows him to use her in the hope that during their time together she can coax Sawyer into acquiring feelings for her and forgetting about her cousin, Ashton.

I loved this book but at the same time i hated it as well. I loved the book due to its comedic and romantic content. It did evoke emotion in me. The three main emotions prevalent throughout the story was agitation, sadness and happiness. For example, it brought tears from my eyes when Abbi Glines  explained the relationship between Lana and her parents.

However, towards the middle of the book the main characters started to frustrating me. I felt like Lana was too easy-going when it came to Sawyer until the very end. Their relationship resembled a roller coaster and began to be very repetitive.

I enjoyed the way Abbi Glines wrote this book both in the writing itself and the two-person POV. It drew me in from the beginning and captivated me to continue reading on.

In the end, I love how she ended the book with the four main characters: Beau, Sawyer, Ashton and Lana. I especially liked how she ended the tension between Beau and his father as well as the complexity between Lana and her mother.

Overall, I would say this book was okay. I would recommend this book for people who like drama and comedy as well as romance. I believe that more mature audiences should read this book as some scenes can be a little risque.
